Vaginal Condoms: A Complete Guide to Safe, Comfortable Protection

Many people know that male condoms play an important role in sexual health and protection; However, Vaginal (or Internal) Condoms Are Just As Effective, Yet Are Often Ignored As An Option For Sexual Health Protection.

Vaginal condoms are designed to provide individuals with greater options for their sexual health through an innovative and empowering way to protect both partners. Vaginal condoms offer multiple advantages including increased versatility in placing them and providing an alternative to using a male condom.

What Are Vaginal Condoms?

Vaginal condoms are made of soft and stretchy fabric-like materials (nitrile and polyurethane) that can be used as barriers to prevent fertilisation of an egg in a woman's uterus. They are placed in a woman’s vagina before she has any sexual contact with her partner and, unlike regular (external) condoms that cover the outside of a man’s penis, vaginal condoms are placed inside a woman’s vagina, and can help to reduce the risk of pregnancy and STDs for both partners.

How Do Vaginal Condoms Work?

A condom features two distinct rings of material:

1. The inner ring is inserted up into the vagina to help keep the condom securely in place.

2. The outer ring is designed to sit outside the vaginal opening and provides coverage to part of the external genital region.

By using this design, any semen produced during sex is collected inside the pouch and not able to come into contact with the partner's bodily fluids which decreases the chance that a woman will become pregnant and the partner can get STIs.

Benefits of Vaginal Condoms

1. Protection by Dual Methods

Condoms can provide both protection against pregnancy and protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (such as HIV). Therefore, they can keep you safe while participating in sexual activity.

2. Control of Female Contraception

A vaginal condom gives a woman complete control over her method of contraception, where the possibility of negotiating the use of male or female condom(s) during sexual activity might not exist.

3. Non-Latex Alternative

Vaginal condoms are made primarily from a material that contains no latex and therefore would be an appropriate choice for persons with an allergy to latex.

4. Early Insertion Capability

Vaginal condoms can be inserted up to several hours prior to sexual activity; this enables a higher degree of spontaneity in sexual activity than with male condom(s).

5. High Level of Comfort

According to reports from many women, vaginal condoms provide a sensation that is more similar to that of sexual intercourse without any type of condom than do male condom(s).

How to Use Vaginal Condoms

To ensure that your condom is safe to apply use by identifying through the evidence of its packaging for any type of damage or signs of an expired date. Next, should be used and positioned inside the vagina in the same manner as using a tampon where it must be pushed into the vagina, towards the back of the body, to reach the cervical area while having the outer ring/rim remaining outside of the vagina. Place the penis into the condom while performing sexual intercourse in the same manner if using a male condom that has been placed on the penis. Finally, after engaging in sexual intercourse, with the outer ring/rim rotate it/gently to the right (clockwise) and then slowly remove it from the vagina away from the vaginal canal.

Tips for Effective Use

Women should never put their condoms together with their male partner's condoms; if you are going to have sexual relations, you need to have separate condoms for every act of sexual intercourse. The only thing that is supposed to go into a condom is your penis, therefore; make sure that each time you use a condom that your penis is in the condom; do not put your penis in between the condom and the vagina of the woman that you are with.
