Male and Female Condoms: Complete Guide to Safe and Smart Protection

Condoms are a great option to help prevent an unplanned pregnancy and STIs.
Male and Female condoms are the two main types of condoms available, and knowing the differences can help assure you a more protective option.

What Are Male Condoms?

A Male Condom Is A Barrier Method Used By Men To Prevent Pregnancy And Transmitting Infections When Having Sex. A Male Condom Consists Of A Thin Layer Of Rubber That Fits Over The Tip Of A Man's Penis.

There Are Several Types Of Male Condoms Available:
Latex (The Most Common Type)
Non-Latex (For Those Who Are Allergic To Latex)
Flavored (For Use During Oral Sex)
Textured(For Added Sexual Pleasure)

Some Of The Advantages Of Male Condom Use Are:
Available & Inexpensive
Easy To Use
Highly Effective When Used Properly
Protect Against Pregnancy As Well As STDs.

Some Of The Disadvantages Of Male Condom Use Are:
Some Users May Experience Less Feeling Than Without A Condom
If Not Used Properly, Male Condoms Can Rip Or Tear
A Male Condom Must Be Used The Same Way For Every Encounter.

What Are Female Condoms?

Female condoms are worn inside the vagina before intercourse. They are usually made of nitrile or polyurethane and have flexible rings on both ends to keep them in place.

Insertion of a female condom in the vaginal area must occur before engaging in sexual activity with the use of a female condom. Female condoms are typically made from either nitrile or polyurethane and include two flexibly sized circular rings, respectively, on either end to assist in ensuring that during the use of a female condom, the female condom remains in position and does not move undesirably to cause damage to either the female condom or to the user.

A female condom provides a physical barrier between (the vagina), and not to be confused with (the uterus), from sperm leaving the vagina and moving into the uterus. A female condom also provides a physical barrier to the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) between either partner.

Using a female condom provides a woman with a greater level of control over her choice of contraception as opposed to a man's choice of contraception. By using a female condom, a woman can insert the female condom prior to engaging in any form of sexual activity. Since female condoms are constructed from non-latex products, they can typically be utilized by women who have a latex allergy or are sensitive to latex. The exterior area of the female condom is greater than that of any type of male condom.

Conclusion

Condom use during sex is an excellent way to lower the chances of transmitting STDs (like HIV) to one another. The majority of men prefer using male-shaped condoms and the majority of women prefer using female-shaped condoms; therefore, the ultimate decision of which type of condom to use will be determined by who will be using the condom and how he/she feels about using that type of condom and/or who will be having sexual intercourse with his/her partner and/or receiving condom use from him/her. So long as each partner is using his/her condom in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer, there should not be any difficulty for either partner having sexual intercourse.
