Washable Condom: Myth, Reality, and Safe Alternatives
Condoms have received a lot of public attention recently; specifically, washable condoms have aroused curiosity and confusion amongst internet searches. The bigger question is: are condoms realistically reusable (and washed)? Or is this just another myth? This blog will clarify what
we mean when we discuss washable condoms, cover some safety issues associated with them, and ultimately, provide some alternatives to using a washable condom as an adequate method of protection.
What is a Washable Condom?
The term “washable condom” suggests a method of cleaning and reusing condoms without the need for disposal. While this may appear to be a cost-saving or environmentally friendly choice, it is somewhat misrepresented and considered unsafe for multiple reasons.
Can Condoms Be Washed and Reused?
The use of condoms that have been reused has met with strong disapproval.
There is no reason to ever reuse a condom once you've already used, due to the following reasons:
1. Washing condoms (latex and/or polyurethane) will weaken them.
2. The probabilities of tearing or leaking are increased.
3. Condoms will not stop the spread of STDs.
4. Condoms will give less protection against pregnancy.
Even if the condom looks like it's in good shape, it cannot provide you the protection of not being used after it has been washed.
Why Do People Search for Washable Condoms?
What Has Contributed To The Rise Of Reusing Condoms?
Here are some of the reasons for this trend:
- Cost-cutting
- Environmental consciousness
- Poor sexual education
- Internet misinformation
Although these are all valid concerns, it is not safe to reuse a Condom.
Safe and Practical Alternatives
1. Price-Sensitive Alternative Options For Purchasing Condoms
A growing number of condom manufacturers have developed low-cost, but still safe for single use, condoms.
2. Buying In Bulk
By purchasing condoms in bulk you will save money on each individual condom.
3. Free Accessories (From Local Government or Non-Profit Organizations).
In many areas there are public health programmes and general public health awareness initiatives that distribute free condoms at local hospitals and clinics.
4. Eco-Friendly Choices (Producing Natural Materials That Are More Environmentally Friendly Than Traditional Products).
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, then consider brands that sell condoms in an eco-friendly package and/or will be entirely biodegradable after use – both of which typically happen after only one use.
Health Risks of Reusing Condoms
Using a used condom can carry a heavy amount of risk.
Possibility for an unwanted pregnancy
Transitional disease transfer (i.e. chlamydia/gonorrhea/HIV)
Physical harm from a compromised condom
No disinfectant exists that would ever allow for a condom to be returned to its original state through any chemical (water/soap/disinfectant/antibacterial).
Conclusion
The fact that there are "washable condoms" available is largely a fallacy. The best way to protect yourself is by using a new condom each and every time. While cost and environmental issues may have an effect on condom use, you should never compromise your health for these reasons.
